From Chile, having the great Voodoo Chile
Paul Evans (Chile) 1/31/2010 8:21 AM
Well, I must say that I was lucky enough, since Richard Himself (the one who reviews this tube) has hit the spot. I've had mostly new tubes and Jan Philips 5751. I wanted to try a nos one to get what's the idea. I never understood what people called a musical tube, and well, this RCA 12ax7a is really a musical one! You hear some bells and rings that I never heard before in my Vellocette 12R 15w combo, which I consider to be a dark sounding amp, now it has all the sparkle and chime, and well, now I'm getting a couple more ;)

Voodoo Chile scream
Richard (Red River Valley, La.) 7/29/2009 8:16 PM
The V1 slot has been the weak link for good tone in my Super-Sonic amp. The OEM Sovtek 12AX7AWC does okay. The Mullard Re-Issue is flat without sparkle. The GE JAN 5751 was an improvement, but the RCA 12AX7A gray plates works best for Hendrix Strat tone. The RCA much more musical in the V1 spot. This is where it establishes it reputation as the standard of the industry. (Unlike in the V3 where it sounds unmusical and is distorts unpleasently under high gain.) It is the last piece in the puzzle for oustanding Strat tones. The tones I am getting on the Strat with the RCA are pure Hendrix like. Rich, singing, woman-tone...vibrating in my hands. All pickups are so musical. That tone of "Voodoo Chile" (With Steve Winwood and Jack Casady) is now mine. This is a paramount milestone for me. It is a musical goal -spanning four decades - finally has arrived.
